Development of Aircraft Underwing Refueling in 1944
In 1944, Savage was actively involved with the first design for under wing refueling. Since then, testing
has been conducted with the United States Air Force and Navy. This has lead to approval by AFSSEA
and NAVAIR for hot refueling pantograph loading systems.
First Bottom Loading Facility
In 1948, Savage designed and installed the first bottom loading facility (200 gpm) in the world at a
Shell Oil plant in Indiana.
First Spring Loaded Valve for Top Loading Loading Arms
During the later part of the 1940's Savage developed the first spring loaded
control valve for the undercarriage of liquid transports to the control the flow of product in an
emergency situation. This technology was incorporated into the first top loading, spring loaded valve for use on
loading arms for then Wheaton Brass Company.

Brodie Instrument Inc., on hydraulic control valves. Today this technology is used at every gasoline bottom loading
facility.
Increased Product Flows from 250-gpm to 700 gpm
During the 1950's Savage lead industry efforts to
increase product flows from 250 gpm to flow rates in excess of 700 gpm.
